The company’s certificate number is: SCS-COC-001220. The initial focus of HIH will be on importing engineered products that combine certified content in the core of a panel with a locally grown Hawaiian sourced face veneer. HIH is in final negotiations with Kamehameha Schools for the processing of timber from their FSC certified forest at Honaunau on the Big Island. KS Honaunau is the first FSC Certified Forest in Hawaii.

Introducing Hawaiian Heritage Certified Wood Products

We are proud to introduce the first locally grown, Forest Stewardship Council certified products from Hawaii.

This line of superior forest products is carefully harvested by Hawaii Island Hardwoods from the FSC certified* Kamehameha Schools Honaunau Forest on the Big Island of Hawaii.

FSC Certified Tropical Ash

Originally introduced in 1880 as a shade tree, Tropical Ash has been planted in Hawai‘i as a forest and watershed cover tree since the 1920s. It can grow to 80 feet in height and three feet in diameter. The wood is white and similar to white ash, but is moderately hard and lightweight (specific gravity .47). It has applications in furniture for its especially light coloring and fine grain.

FSC Certified Eucalyptus Saligna

Widely used for forestation in Hawai‘i since 1880, this tree grows to 200 feet in height with a trunk diameter up to 4 feet. The wood is moderately heavy (specific gravity .61, with mature wood over 50 years old approaching .75), and runs from pale brown through pink in color, and tends to darken when finished. The wood is fine grained, and resembles cherry in many applications. The grain tends to be straight to strongly interlocked, and may show distinct ribbon-striped figures on quarter-sawn faces. Please ask for information about other species that may become available soon.

The launch of the Hawaiian Heritage line is a milestone in our efforts to promote equitable management of the world’s renewable forests. Recognizing the unique quality and esthetic value of Hawaiian grown woods, we’ve made a commitment to the preservation of Hawaii’s forests as a Chain of Custody certified supplier. By purchasing FSC certified products from HIH you become part of a rapidly growing global effort to manage our forests responsibly.

Introducing Controlled Wood

Hawaii Island Hardwoods LLC (HIH) has achieved Controlled Wood Status (not centered)

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has a particular Standard for non FSC-Certified which is called Controlled Wood. This Standard is called FSC-STD-40-005. The purpose of the standard is to assist companies buying non FSC-certified wood material or products to use these species in conjunction with FSC Certified substrates. An example would be non-certified face veneer on a certified core in a plywood panel or for engineered flooring.

The requirement of Controlled Wood is that:

1. The wood is not from timber that was harvested illegally.

2. Wood was not from areas where traditional civil rights are violated.

3. Wood was not harvested from non FSC certified forests having high conservation values which are threatened.

4. Wood not harvested from genetically modified trees

5. Wood not harvested from areas which have been converted from natural forest to plantations or non forest use.

To achieve Controlled Wood status, HIH has shown evidence that these requirements have been met in the appropriate governmentally distinct area. The Island of Hawaii – being a county with distinctly defined boundaries - qualifies as a properly zoned effective area. HIH has also shown that specific policies and procedures for monitoring and insuring that the requirements are in effect and are being met for several distinct land ownerships with which the company has timber supply relationships.
